“Painting the Town Red . . . and Black” is the theme of this year’s Homecoming, organized by the Homecoming Committee, a student group in the University Union.
Festivities began at midnight Oct. 10 with traditional street painting on Sanford Drive and continue all week.

The weekend will bring thousands of alumni back to campus for events sponsored by schools and colleges and the Georgia-Vanderbilt football game at which the Homecoming king and queen will be crowned.

Here are the major student activities during the week (for details, check www.uga.edu/homecoming):

Oct. 11: Dawg Rally/Tailgate with the Team, an old-fashioned pep rally, will be held at 4 p.m. on Legion Field. Athletes, cheerleaders and football coach Mark Richt will attend and there will be door prizes, food and performances by student groups.

Oct. 12: The movie Miracle will be shown at the Brumby Beach Bash at 8 p.m. on the Brumby Hall lawn. The movie and popcorn are free.

Oct. 13: Hypnotist Dale K, a popular performer on the college circuit, will appear at 8 p.m. in the Ramsey Student Center volleyball arena. Tickets are on sale at the Tate Student Center.

Oct. 14: “Painting the Plaza Red” is the theme of a Homecoming party from 11 a.m. to
2 p.m. on the Tate Student Center plaza. Activities include interactive -attractions, student performances, a local band and appearances by Hairy Dawg and the cheerleaders, plus free pizza.

Oct. 15: The Homecoming Parade, with former athletic director Vince Dooley as grand marshal, will step off at 6:30 p.m. from a starting point on Dougherty Street.

The route through downtown Athens covers Pulaski, Clayton, Thomas and Washington streets and College Avenue. The parade will also include the Redcoat Band, floats, marching units and UGA and Athens dignitaries.

Ten students on the Homecoming Court are vying for the title of Homecoming king and queen. Students will vote during the week on the OASIS computer system and the winners will be crowned during halftime of the Georgia-Vanderbilt football game, which begins at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 16 in Sanford Stadium.

Several schools and colleges are sponsoring Homecoming activities for alumni. The Warnell School of Forest Resources will hold an alumni symposium Oct. 14 and a golf tournament and social events on Oct. 15. The school’s alumni association will hold a meeting and barbecue Oct. 16 at Flinchum’s Phoenix. School of Law reunion parties are scheduled Oct. 15 with a Homecoming barbecue Oct. 16 before the game. College of Pharmacy activities Oct. 16 include class reunions followed by a barbecue, presentation of alumni awards and a silent auction. The Terry College of Business plans a buffet and the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication a barbecue before the game Oct. 16.

The equestrian, volleyball and soccer teams will compete Oct. 15.
