‘Express’ checkout: Library catalog expands across state
The catalog for the UGA Libraries has exploded. Now when users go to GIL

(http://gil.uga.edu) they have the option of searching all the catalogs of the University System of Georgia’s 34 public colleges and universities and the Gwinnett University Center.

An automated library borrowing system for the university system libraries and the Gwinnett University Center Library, recently implemented, allows every authorized USG library patron to borrow items from any USG library. Material is available to all eligible patrons through both an on-site (walk-up) service and a remote requesting service through the GIL Universal Catalog.

Deadline for new promotion, tenure standards approaches
Academic units throughout the university are busy developing new criteria for decisions on faculty promotion and tenure as a Nov. 15 deadline approaches for submitting the criteria for review.
Faculty win seed grants to develop long-term outreach activities
The Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach has awarded 18 grants for the development of long-term, sustainable domestic and international outreach activities. Applications were solicited through two grant programs—the Scholarship of Engagement Grants for University Engagement and the International Development Education Awards.
Council votes to create reorganization guidelines
After approving an administrative reorganization of the College of Education at its Oct. 21 meeting, the University Council voted to create guidelines for future reorganizations of university academic units.

The scholarship of teaching
The Teaching Academy at UGA is celebrating its fifth anniversary this month. Columns spoke with two long-time members, Joe Broder, assistant dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and Ron Simpson, Emeritus Professor of Higher Education, about the successes of the first five years and the plans for the future.

Campaign for Charities gets under way
As in years past, the university will conduct a single campaign for charitable contributions to United Way organizations, state-wide independent agencies and independent federations approved through the State Charitable Contributions Program.
Three employees in forest resources win staff awards
Jay Brown, forestry research technician III; Donna Gallaher, coordinator, Master Timber Harvester Education Program; and David Higginbotham, fisheries research coordinator II, are the 2004 Staff Award recipients in Warnell School of Forest Resources.
