UGA plans International Education Week events
International Education Week begins on Nov. 15 with a celebration from 6 to 9 p.m. in Georgia Hall at the Tate Student Center.

The event will feature international cuisine, music and dance, a silent auction, and the announcement of winners of the “World in Photos” contest. The Athens community and UGA faculty, staff and students are invited to attend.

Tickets are available at the Tate Student Center box office for $8; UGA student tickets are $5. Tickets for children ages 6–12 are $3 and children under age 6 will be admitted free.

“Following in the footsteps of last year’s extremely successful celebration, this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever,” says Mary Ann Kelly, associate director of immigration services in International Education.

In addition to celebrating international education, the event will help raise funds for scholarships for UGA students studying abroad and international students at UGA.

“What a great chance to sample the world’s cuisines while enjoying music, costumes, cultures, and an exceptional photography exhibit without having to pack a suitcase or update your passport,” Kelly says. “And you just might be able to pick up a trinket or two to take home at the end of the evening.”

National institutions began celebrating International Education Week in 2000. Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and Secretary of Education Rod Paige established the week of Nov. 15 as this year’s International Education Week.

The celebration offers local and international communities the opportunity to exchange ideas and stories about their culture and heritage. Individuals may donate a prepared international or ethnic food dish or a local or international handicraft or other item for the auction. Dishes that feed at least eight people earn the donor $2 off the celebration admission price.

“If you have studied abroad, traveled abroad, dreamed about travel or experienced the world through friendships with the international community at UGA, you will thoroughly enjoy this premiere event,” says Kelly.
