University scientist named interim dean of new public health college

Phil Williams

The university’s new College of Public Health will become operational Jan. 1 under the leadership of Phillip L. Williams, a UGA scientist who will serve as interim dean.

Williams is the Georgia Power Professor of Environmental Health in the department of environmental health science, one of the units that make up the new college. An authority in the areas of toxicology and chemical exposures, he was on the committee that developed the proposal for the college.

Williams’s appointment as interim dean was announced today by Arnett C. Mace Jr., senior vice president for academic affairs and provost.

Former U.S. deputy AG will speak at Commencement
Larry Thompson, the former U.S. deputy attorney general who this summer became the top legal officer for PepsiCo, will be the speaker for fall semester commencement Dec. 18 in Stegeman Coliseum.

‘Uninspiring’ year ahead for both state, U.S. economies
Rising interest rates, dwindling federal fiscal stimulus and overextended consumers should result in “relatively uninspired” economies for both the state and nation in 2005, according to the annual economic forecast released last week by the Terry College of Business.
Committee will consider procedures for reorganization of academic units
A faculty committee will begin working in January to develop guidelines and procedures for reorganizing university academic units.
Search committee named for VP research position
A 19-member committee to conduct a national search for a new vice president for research at UGA has been named by Arnett C. Mace Jr., senior vice president for academic affairs and provost.

The three UGA employees named Michael Adams met briefly last month at the request of a photographer for the student newspaper.
Making the connection
Students of anthropology professor Bob Rhoades are engaged in a hands-on project in Oglethorpe County at a 320-acre farm named Agrarian Connections.
