University Council meeting
The University Council meeting scheduled for April 23 at 3:30 p.m in the law school auditorium has been cancelled.


Promotion, tenure forum
Vice President for Academic Affairs William F. Prokasy will conduct a forum on the promotion and tenure process for all interested faculty April 22 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the law school auditorium. The format of the forum will be a question-and-answer session.


Snyder Lecture
The annual Darl Snyder Lecture will be held April 20 at 3:30 p.m. in the Chapel. Sponsored by the African Studies Program, the lecture will feature three globally recognized and noted African authors and playwrights who will provide their knowledge, views and experiences on the topic "Theater Arts in Africa: Culture, Politics and Gender."

Speakers include Akinwumi Isola from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria and a current guest scholar on campus; Ulisa Amadu Maddy of Sierra Leone, artistic director of the Gbakanda Afrika Tiata, and Tejumola Olaniyan, currently at the University of Virginia.

All speakers bring to the lecture a deep understanding of the importance of the theater arts in Africa's cultures, from a historical perspective to current forms of expression.


Brazilian Music Week
The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies is sponsoring several events for Brazilian Music Week April 20-25. On April 21 at 8 p.m. in Ramsey Concert Hall, Brazilian conductor Norton Morozovick will give a flute recital. Pianist Glacy Antunes will give a recital April 23 at 8 p.m. in Ramsey Hall. Gerontology reception
The university community is invited to an exchange of ideas with new faculty of the Gerontology Center--M. Elaine Cress, exercise science/gerontology; Adam Davey, child and family development; and Roger W. GLOBES lecture
Cartoonist Alison Bechdel, creator of the strip Dykes to Watch Out For, will deliver the fourth annual GLOBES lecture April 23 at 7 p.m in Georgia Hall of the Tate Student Center.

Bechdel will discuss the traditional representation of female cartoon characters, growing up lesbian in American culture, her creative process and her belief that cartoons are a powerful, accessible medium for education and change.

Open free to the public, the program is sponsored by University Union/Ideas and Issues and the Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual Employees and Supporters of UGA. A reception and book signing sponsored by the Women's Studies Program will follow Bechdel's talk.


'Women's work' discussion
A reading and discussion entitled "Women's Work in the Arts: Being Heard, Being Seen" will be held May 5 at 4:30 p.m. in Cheeley Room on the third floor of the law school.

Sponsored by the Women's Studies Program, the event features readings by Mary White (fiction), Janet Wondra (poetry) and discussion with Linda Tadic (film) and June Ball (painting) of their works. A reception will follow. For more information, call 542-2846.


Religion, sexuality dialogue
The Rev. Jane Adams Spahr will be on campus twice to speak about the gays and lesbians in the Presbytery debate. Both talks are open free to the public.

Spahr will speak April 21 at 7:45 p.m. at the Presbyterian Student Center (1250 South Lumpkin Street). On April 24 from 12:10 to 1 p.m. in the African-American Culture Center (407 Memorial Hall), she will speak on "Answering the Call: Lesbians Struggle to Serve." In conjunction with that lecture, Spahr's two videos--Your Mom's a Lesbian. Here's Your Lunch; Have a Good Day at School and Maybe We're Talking About a Different God--will be screened at 11 a.m. in 407 Memorial Hall.

The talks are co-sponsored by the UGA chapter of the Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual Employees and Supporters, the Presbyterian Student Center and the Women's Studies Program.


Social work conference
A national leader on community empowerment practices and curriculum will discuss her research as part of a day-long conference at the School of Social Work set for April 27.

Terry Mizrahi, a professor at Hunter College of Social Work, will speak on "Toward the 21st Century: Trends in Community Empowerment," beginning at 3 p.m. in room E/F at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Her talk, open free to the public, will be followed by a reception in the Hill Atrium. Mizrahi's talk is part of the unveiling of the School of Social Work's new concentration in community empowerment and program development.


Phi Beta Kappa lecture
James Boyd White will give the Phi Beta Kappa Lecture May 4 at 4 p.m. in the Chapel. The lecture is open free to the public.

White has been the Hart Wright Professor of Law, professor of English and adjunct professor of classical studies at the University of Michigan since 1983. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, White has received NEH and Guggenheim fellowships, and was a visiting fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge University, in 1990. He is chair of the Michigan Society of Fellows and a member of the American Law Institute.


Zeimer Seminar
The graduate student organization in agricultural and applied economics department will sponsor the Rod Zeimer Seminar on April 28 at 4 p.m. in 110 Conner Hall.

Seminar speaker Walter Armbruster, executive director of the Farm Foundation and current president of the American Agricultural Economics Association, will discuss the role of NGO in evaluating and influencing governmental policy changes domestically and internationally.


Human mating lecture
David M. Buss of the psychology department at the University of Texas will give a lecture on "Strategies of Human Mating" May 5 at 3:30 p.m. in 265 Park Hall.
