UGA partners with Penn on biodefense research project

The University of Georgia has signed a five-year $3 million subcontract to develop a database that will contain comprehensive information about some pathogens on a biodefense priority list established by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.

The subcontract teams UGA with the University of Pennsylvania to develop a “virtual database” that serves as a single access point to genomic and related information about parasites in the phylum Apicomplexa, which includes organisms that cause malaria and toxoplasmosis.

Two faculty members will serve as interim deans
Josef M. Broder and Sheila W. Allen have been named interim deans of their colleges by Provost Arnett C. Mace Jr., pending approval by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents.

Dietzler named director of university’s Alumni Association
Deborah Dietzler, who has served as interim executive director of the UGA Alumni Association since February, has been named permanently to the position.

Patrick Bordnick, a professor in the School of Social Work, has found that cigarette craving intensity increased 118 percent when nicotine-dependent participants were exposed to cues in a virtual reality environment.
Train of thought: Education professor attends UNESCO conference about preparing next generation of a quality workforce
Richard Lynch, professor of occupational studies in the College of Education, traveled to China in November to attend a conference sponsored by UNESCO, the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Grant will help provide informatics training to Brazilian scientists
UGA’s Center for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases has received a $1.2 million, five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center to provide informatics training to Brazilian researchers.

Matthew Crim wins Marshall Scholarship
Matthew Crim, a senior Honors student from Cartersville, has been selected as a 2005 Marshall Scholar.
Travis Canova gets Rotary scholarship
Travis Canova, a senior Honors student at UGA, is the recipient of the Ambassadorial Scholarship, awarded by the Rotary Foundation.
