Alumni Association lecture marks Founders’ Day ceremony

The UGA Alumni Association will mark UGA’s 220th anniversary Jan. 27 with the annual Founders’ Day Lecture at 3 p.m. in the Chapel.

Ronald L. Carlson, emeritus professor in the School of Law, will present the lecture, titled “Dramatic Moments in the Pursuit of Justice.” Carlson, who held the Fuller E. Callaway Chair in the law school, is an authority on evidence, trial practice and criminal procedure and is often contacted by state and national news media for expert commentary on high-profile court cases.

Study: UGA has $2 billion impact on Athens economy
A recently released study says the University System of Georgia has a $9.7 billion annual economic impact on the state, a $1.7 billion increase since a similar study was conducted in 2002. Of the system’s 34 member institutions, the University of Georgia has the single greatest economic impact on its host community.

The original charter of the first state university will be displayed Jan. 27 following restoration and conservation work.

A lipid that helps destroy potentially harmful cells during brain development shows promise for improving the safety and efficacy of stem cell transplants, say researchers at the Medical College of Georgia and University of Georgia.
