The Empowered Youth Programs, created by Deryl Bailey, assistant professor of counseling and human development services, received the 2004 Multicultural Program Award from the National -Association for Multicultural Education.

Empowered Youth is an expansion of Bailey’s highly recognized “Gentlemen on the Move” program in which about 60 Athens-area elementary, middle and high school students, mostly African-American males, participate. Parents of the students meet monthly to provide feedback, receive support and participate in workshops.

Approximately 150 Athens-area students participate in EYP, which now includes GOTM, Young Women Scholars and Parents of Empowered Youth.

John “Crawfish” Crawford, public service representative of the university’s Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island, received the 2004 Millie Graham Award from the Georgia Association of Marine Educators.

This award recognizes lifelong achievements in individuals who provide service above and beyond the call of duty in the area of marine science education.

Leara Rhodes, associate professor of journalism, received the 2004 Barry Bingham Sr. Fellowship from the National Conference of Editorial Writers.

The Bingham Fellowship is presented annually to a journalism educator for leadership in education and attracting minority students into journalism careers.

Known as a strong supporter of human rights, conservation and the arts, Barry Bingham Sr. guided the Courier-Journal and the Louisville Times to national prominence starting in 1937 when he succeeded his father as chief officer of the newspaper company.

Rhodes chairs the diversity committee in the Grady College and was the principal author of the college’s diversity plan, which aims to increase minority faculty and students. She is also active as a faculty member of UGA’s African Studies Institute and an associate member of the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program.

Judith H. Willis, professor of cellular biology, is a Fellow of the Entomological Society of America.

The designation of ESA Fellow recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to entomology. They need not be members of the Society. Up to 10 designations may be made annually. Fellows receive gratis registration to the ESA annual meeting in the year the title is bestowed, at which time they are presented with an inscribed plaque.

The Entomological Society of America is the largest organization in the world serving the professional and scientific needs of entomologists and people in related disciplines.

Founded in 1889, ESA today has more than 6,000 members.

Kudos recognizes special contributions of staff, faculty and administrators in teaching, research and service. News items are limited to election into office of state, regional, national and international societies; major awards and prizes; and similarly notable accomplishments.
