Kudos

The Georgia Recreation and Park Association has given its highest award to Daniel Hope III, who retired from UGA late last year after 23 years of teaching and public service in recreation and leisure services.

Hope received the association’s Distinguished Professional Award, which recognizes an association member for outstanding contributions throughout a career to the profession and to Georgia communities.

Karen H. Jones, a professor of occupational studies, has been named outstanding educator for the region by the Association for Career and Technical Education. She received the award in ACTE’s region II (which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia) after winning the state honor from the Georgia Association for Career and Technical Education this past fall. Jones was recognized for her research on the preparation of vocational career and technical educators to work with students from special populations who are at-risk for failing or dropping out of school.

Genetics professor Sidney Kushner received the Faculty Mentor of the Year Award from the State Doctoral Scholars Program of the Southern Regional Education Board.

The nation’s first interstate compact for education, the Southern Regional Education Board was created in 1948 by Southern states to help government and education leaders work cooperatively to advance education and improve the social and economic life of the region.

SREB’s Doctoral Scholars Program was created in 1993 to specifically increase the number of minority scholars who earn Ph.D.s and seek to become faculty members at colleges and universities.

Jenny Penney Oliver, director of academic initiatives in the College of Education has been named 2004 distinguished alumna at North Carolina State University’s College of Education.

Oliver, co-director of the Partnership for Community Learning Centers Initiative, a collaborative effort between UGA, the Clarke County schools and the Athens-Clarke County community to raise student achievement, holds an M.Ed. in education and a B.A. in psychology from North Carolina State University. She received her Ph.D. in counselor education and educational psychology from Kansas State University.

Pedro Villegas, professor of avian medicine, received an honorary degree in veterinary medicine from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain. The Doctor Honoris Causa degree was awarded to Villegas for his contributions to the development and understanding of poultry diseases that have an impact on the poultry industry. His research includes the discovery of the VG/GA strain of the Newcastle disease virus, and a vaccine used worldwide for the control of this costly disease in chickens.

Kudos recognizes special contributions of staff, faculty and administrators in teaching, research and service. News items are limited to election into office of state, regional, national and international societies; major awards and prizes; and similarly notable accomplishments.
