Endowment honors late entomology professor, his wife

The entomology department in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences has received a gift of more than half a million dollars that eventually will establish an endowment honoring the late UGA entomologist Herbert H. Ross and his wife, Jean.

The $505,000 donation from Ross’s son and daughter-in-law, Charles A. and June R.P. Ross, is the largest gift the entomology department has ever received. It will be used to establish the Herbert H. and Jean A. Ross Memorial Endowment to further the study of insect systematics.

Endnote, popular bibliographic software, is acquired for university community’s use
Thanks to proceeds from the student technology fee, the libraries and the Graduate School are providing free access to popular bibliographic software, Endnote, which provides correctly styled in-text citations and bibliographies for scholarly writing.

A new Center for Drug Discovery at the university will promote research aimed at finding chemical and biological agents to combat infectious diseases and cancer.

Mary Frasier, gifted education scholar and Torrance Center founder, dies Feb. 3
Mary M. Frasier, an internationally recognized scholar and researcher in gifted education and founder of the Torrance Center for Creativity and Talent Development in the College of Education, died on Feb. 3.

Former Dean Rusk Prof of International Relations dies
Martin J. Hillenbrand, who joined UGA’s political science department following a lengthy career as a U.S. diplomat and was the Dean Rusk Professor of International Relations for 15 years, died Feb. 2. He was 89.
Lessons to be learned: Historian studies education system of freed slaves after Civil War
Ron Butchart, a professor of social science education, has received a $318,775 grant from the Spencer Foundation to study the formal education of freed slaves in the American South between 1861 and 1875.
