Casimir Akoh |
Casimir Akoh, associate professor of food science
and technology, received the Stephen S. Chang Award from the American
Oil Chemists’ Society.
The second most prestigious award given by AOCS, the award recognizes
a scientist who has made decisive accomplishments in basic research
for the improvement or development of products related to lipids through
a single breakthrough or through an accumulation of publications.
Akoh is also serving as two-year term as AOCS secretary.
George Benson, dean of the Terry College of Business,
has been elected to the board of directors of AGCO Corp., a manufacturer
and distributor of agricultural equipment based in Duluth.
Benson will serve on the governance committee and stand for shareholder
election in April 2006. He currently serves as audit committee chair
on the board of Nutrition 21 Inc.
Paul M. Bertsch, director of UGA’s Savannah
River Ecology Laboratory, received the Soil Science Research Award,
a career achievement award from the Soil Science Society of America,
the largest international soil science organization, with approximately
6,000 members. The award is given annually to individuals for outstanding
achievements in soil science research.
Bertsch also serves on the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Advanced
Photon Source, the advisory board of Advances in Agronomy, and has
served as an associate editor of the Soil Science Society of America
Journal. He has also been appointed to the national Environmental
Protection Agency task force to develop criteria for natural attenuation
of inorganic contaminants. He has been elected a Fellow of the American
Society of Agronomy and of the Soil Science Society of America.
The American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America
and the Soil Science Society of America are educational organizations
helping their 11,000-plus members advance the disciplines and practices
of agronomy and crop and soil sciences.

Stanley Fletcher |
Stanley M. Fletcher, professor of agricultural and
applied economics, is president of the Council for Agricultural Science
and Technology.
A member of CAST since 1988, Fletcher is the fourth CAES faculty member
to serve as the group’s president, more than any of other university.
He has also has served as chair of the group’s plant and soils
workgroup and chair of the national concerns committee. CAST is a
consortium of scientific societies that provides information about
agricultural science and technology, including task force reports
on topics of particular interest and concern. Formed in 1972, CAST
now includes 36 scientific societies representing all of the major
agricultural related scientific societies in the United States.
Elena V. Sarmiento, an instructor of Spanish in the
department of Romance languages, received the Professor of the Year
Award from the Georgia chapter of the American Association of Teachers
of Spanish and Portuguese.
Kudos recognizes special contributions
of staff, faculty and administrators in teaching, research and service.
