Education team wins fellowship

A College of Education team of two faculty members and three doctoral students has been awarded the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education’s fourth annual
U.S. National Technology Leadership Initiative Fellowship in Science Education and Technology for 2005.

Thomas Koballa, professor of science education, and Leslie Upson, instructor, along with doctoral students Cynthia C. Minchew, Amy Parlo and Justus Inyega, were recognized for their paper, “Using Technology to Support Evidence-based Science Teaching and Mentoring.”

The NTLI fellowships were established to recognize exemplary presentations related to integration of technology in the core content areas at the annual meetings of each participating association. The fellowship is awarded to an exemplary paper on the topic of technology in science education. The UGA group will represent the Association for Science Teacher Education next month by presenting the paper at the SITE 2005 annual conference in Phoenix.

M.B.A. students win Georgia Bowl
For the 14th time in its 15-year history, a team of M.B.A. students from the Terry College of Business took first place in the annual Georgia Bowl Business Plan Competition, hosted this year on the UGA campus. A business plan crafted by the International Distribution Solutions team of James O’Reilly, Steve Boycourt and Tanner Sheehan beat out plans presented by teams from several other universities, including Georgia Tech, the University of Louisville, the University of Manitoba and the Florida Institute of Technology.

The IDS plan provides warehousing and distribution solutions at the Port of Savannah for small- to medium-sized importers and exporters. It tied for second in the best written plan category, and the team placed first for best verbal presentation. The team’s Georgia Bowl victory qualifies them to compete in other national business plan competitions, including the prestigious Moot Corp competition held in May at the University of Texas.

Third place in the competition was won by the Terry College M.B.A. team developing Webmasters International. The WMI team’s plan to develop, maintain and update client Web sites was judged best written plan, while the team placed second in the best verbal presentation category. Georgia Tech finished second with a plan to manufacture and market special sensors for industrial robots.

Grady College senior wins radio award
A senior in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication received the WSB Radio Award earlier this month at the annual DiGamma Kappa banquet on the UGA campus.

Ashley Caudill, a senior broadcast news major from Woodstock, received the award for her commitment to community service through radio broadcasting.

“Selecting Ashley to receive the WSB Award was an easy choice because of her excellent work and service in radio,” says Alison Alexander, head of UGA’s telecommunications department.

Caudill began her career in radio as a freshman at UGA. Currently she delivers the morning on-air news for WGAU 1340 in Athens and serves as color commentator for the gymnastics team’s meets.

The WSB Radio Award was created by Atlanta radio station 750 WSB. Awarded annually, it recognizes a telecommunications student who shows an outstanding commitment to community service who plans to embark on a career in radio.
