Mongella, Pan-African Parliament president, will receive Delta Prize

Gertrude Mongella

Gertrude Ibengwe Mongella, the first president of the Pan-African Parliament, will receive the 2005 Delta Prize for Global Understanding at a banquet on March 1 on campus. Mongella will be recognized for her lifelong championship of women’s and children’s rights.

A symposium on Mongella’s contributions to global understanding will take place the same day at 4 p.m. in Masters Hall of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. The symposium will feature a panel discussion with Mongella; Andrew M. Daraja, Tanzanian ambassador to the United States; and Lioba Moshi, director of the African Studies Institute at UGA. Betty Jean Craige, director of the Center for Humanities and Arts, will moderate. The symposium is free and open to the public.

Emerging new discipline: Upcoming conference will meld engineering, ecology
New programs afoot in Georgia to bring hard science expertise to engineering through ecology and engineering science will serve as the basis for an upcoming conference on the subject. The conference, “Ecological Network Analysis,” will run March 1–3 at the Georgia Center.

New regional consortium will strengthen academic programs at SEC universities
The 12 universities in the Southeastern Conference, with a tradition in intercollegiate athletics, are joining forces to strengthen academic programs at conference schools.

A new Spanish-language Web site allows potential students and their parents to learn about the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.

A team of researchers led by UGA psychologist Dorothy Fragaszy this past fall published the first direct scientific report of tool use among a population of wild capuchin monkeys. There have been reports of single instances of this behavior but never of a whole population using tools routinely over a long period of time.
Guardian angels: Volunteers across state monitor rare plant populations
Heather Alley, who got her master’s degree at UGA in horticulture, coordinates the Botanical Guardians program in Georgia from the research lab at the State Botanical Garden.
