Faculty colloquium
The first UGA Colloquium on the Integration of Research and
Teaching will be held March 24 from 1 to 4:30 p.m.
in the auditorium of the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center.
The colloquium is intended to generate conversations among
faculty at all ranks on how to integrate UGA’s teaching
and research missions, to encourage faculty to talk across
disciplines and to share ideas. The colloquium will be convened
by Provost Arnett Mace and David Williams, director of the
Honors Program, the Foundation Fellows program and the Center
for Undergraduate Research Opportunities.
Two panels will stimulate discussion. Betty Jean Craige, University
Professor of Comparative Literature and director of the Center
for Humanities and Arts, will moderate the first panel, “What
Constitutes Research in Various Disciplines and How that Influences
Teaching Inside and Outside the Classroom?” at 1:15 p.m.
Marcus Fechheimer, professor of cell biology, will moderate
the second panel, “How Can Undergraduate Students Become
Engaged in Research in Various Teaching Formats from the Large
Lecture to the One-on-One Directed Study?” Each panel
will last about an hour and include faculty from various academic
ranks and disciplines.
After the colloquium, the proceedings will be available online
at www.isd.uga.edu.
Sponsors for this one-day event are UGA’s Honors Program,
the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities, the UGA
Teaching Academy, the Institute of Higher Education, the Office
of Instructional Support and Development and the Complex Carbohydrate
Research Center.
The event is open to UGA faculty and graduate students. Optional
tours of the CCRC will be scheduled at the close of the colloquium.
Since auditorium seating is limited, participants should register
in advance with Rebecca Ritter at rritter@uga.edu.
