Yale University ends family contribution for low-income students
Yale has joined Harvard in easing the financial burden of a college education on students from low-income families. Parents who earn less than $45,000 per year will no longer be required to contribute to their children’s expenses, and those with incomes between $45,000 and $60,000 will see a reduction in the amount they are expected to pay.

NIH broadens definition of diversity
The National Institutes of Health is redefining the terms for its diversity-oriented grants to open these programs to all “disadvantaged” applicants, such as people with disabilities and those from families whose incomes are below poverty level, regardless of their race. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, the changes began in response to recent lawsuits on the legality of race-based admissions and scholarships, such as the case against the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and a case involving a National Science Foundation graduate fellowship for minorities.
