Kickoff: Public phase of capital campaign begins

Participants in the Archway to Excellence Campaign Volunteer Leadership Day form a human Arch.

UGA publicly launched the largest fund-raising effort in school history April 14, with the announcement of the $500 million Archway to Excellence Campaign during a gala kickoff event at Atlanta’s World Congress Center.

Calling the celebration unlike any the university had seen in its 220 years, President Michael F. Adams welcomed hundreds of alumni and friends to the kickoff.

“Private financial support is what separates great universities from those that are merely good,” Adams said.

Wessler, noted geneticist, named Regents Professor
Susan R. Wessler, Distinguished Research Professor of Plant Biology at UGA, has been named a Regents Professor by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents. Her new position takes effect in August.

Budget for fiscal year 2006 shows upturn for university
The fiscal year 2006 University System budget approved by state legislators the last week of March represents the first year-to-year increase since fiscal year 2002. It fully funds the System formula, providing $103.4 million in enrollment based increases that will give UGA and the other System institutions significant help in mitigating the impact of three fiscal years of budget reductions.

NOAA administrator will deliver inaugural Boyd Lecture on Earth Day
The first George H. Boyd Distinguished Lecture, scheduled for 11 a.m. in the Chapel on April 22, will feature a talk on “Stewardship of Ocean and Coastal Environments.” Retired Vice Admiral Conrad C. Lautenbacher Jr., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and the administrator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, will deliver the free lecture, which is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for research.
Subscriptions go on sale for art center’s 10th anniversary season
Office of Performing Arts Director Timothy A. Bartholow has announced the roster for the Performing Arts Center’s 2005–06 10th anniversary season. The upcoming season will include 30 performances in seven series.

New symposium series will focus on child well-being in Georgia
The first in a series of symposiums focusing on child policy in Georgia
will be held on April 21, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., at the Seney-Stovall Chapel on the grounds of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government. “Improving Child Well-Being” will bring together university faculty, students and staff as well as practitioners and policymakers from throughout the state.

University Council will consider domestic partner benefits
The University Council this week will consider a proposal that would allow domestic partners of university employees to receive certain benefits that are extended by UGA to spouses and dependents of employees.
Time running out to enroll in bachelor’s degree programs offered in Gwinnett
Time is running out for prospective students to enroll in bachelor’s degree programs currently offered by UGA at the Gwinnett University Center. Applications are still being accepted for summer and fall semester 2005, but no additional students will be admitted to UGA’s undergraduate degree programs in Gwinnett after fall semester.
