Adult fitness program
The UGA Fitness Center is accepting new applications for participation in its adult fitness and cardiac rehabilitation programs. The adult fitness program is designed to develop flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, and cardiovascular endurance.
The cardiac rehabilitation program is a series of exercise sessions for people with coronary heart disease, prior heart surgery, or revascularization, or those at risk for developing coronary heart disease. The program builds endurance, strength and flexibility and can assist in preventing the progression of heart disease.
The adult fitness and cardiac rehabilitation programs were developed 23 years ago by Harry DuVal, director of the center and associate professor of exercise science. These programs have served more than 1,500 adult fitness and cardiac rehabilitation participants, about 800 of whom have been cardiac patients. Some have participated in the program for more than 15 years.
Each week the Fitness Center offers three one-hour cardiac rehabilitation exercise sessions (9:30 a.m.,
2:45 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.) and three one-hour adult fitness exercise sessions (6:45 a.m., noon and 5:15 p.m.) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in 101E of the Ramsey Student Center.
The year-long program costs $30/month for the adult fitness program and $35/month for the cardiac rehabilitation program, in addition to an initial entrance and fitness evaluation fee of $95. A physician’s referral is required prior to initial testing and stress-test evaluation.
During the classes, a qualified exercise specialist leads participants in multi-level cardiovascular exercises. Advanced cardiac life support personnel are also on duty during the cardiac rehabilitation exercise sessions to ensure a safe and effective session.
An accurate evaluation of progress, individual exercise data, progress reports and periodic re-test data are kept on each participant and shared with the referring physician when appropriate.
Those interested in joining the program or receiving more information should contact Jacquee Rosumny at 542-4230 or jrosumny@uga.edu.
