UGA will remember deceased students, faculty, staff at ceremony

Twenty-seven students , faculty and staff who have died since last May will be remembered at a candlelight memorial ceremony on April 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel.

“Georgia Remembers . . . A Candlelight Memorial,” held each spring since 2000, helps the university community find comfort and healing while honoring deceased friends, family members and colleagues, says Alan Campbell, associate dean for student support.

Twelve students and 14 faculty and staff members will be remembered in the ceremony. The Chapel bell will toll once as each name is read aloud, and a candle for each person will be lit by members of the Arch Society. The names will be read by Will Childs, president of the Student Government Association; Nancy Felson, chair of the University Council Executive Committee; and Robert Ratajczak, president of Staff Council.

President Michael F. Adams will make opening remarks and introductions. Southern Wind, a student woodwind group from the School of Music, will play, and representatives of the Campus Ministry Association will close the ceremony.

The deceased whose names will be read include:

Students: Bradley T. Arms, a sophomore pre-business major, Charlottesville, Va.; Timothy C. Baldwin, senior telecommunications arts major, Douglasville; Jonathan R. Desso, senior recreation and leisure studies major, Watkinsville; Yan Ding, Ph.D. candidate in pharmacy, Shanghai, China; Angela E. Donoughe, senior psychology major, Thomson; Courtney F. Kemmerlin, freshman biology major, Franklin; Jeremy T. Love, junior real estate major, Loganville; Amanda E. McBride, sophomore pre-journalism major, Duluth; Sarah Ann Miller, incoming freshman, Hoschton; Antonio D. Paggett, sophomore pre-journalism major, Decatur; Louquender Robinson, graduate student in adult education, Atlanta; and Alicia A. Stramiello, sophomore communication sciences and disorders major, Macon.

Faculty and staff: Clint Atkinson, grounds maintenance, physical plant; Larry Blount, associate professor, law; Fariest Clarke, custodian, physical plant; Thomas Elrod, equipment operator and utilities repair, physical plant; Richard Grayson, assistant professor, business; Thomas Hull, custodian, residence hall facilities; Lori Hunter, program coordinator, Fanning Leadership Institute; James Leige, custodial supervisor, physical plant; Barbara Smith, business manager, instructional support and development; Walstine Steffens III, associate research scientist, veterinary medicine; Emma P. Terrell, administrative specialist, law; Andrew Veal, clerk, research services; Elaine Visocky, computer services specialist, family and consumer sciences; Yanyun Wang, postdoctoral associate, chemistry; and Clarence Watkins Jr., accounting assistant, student financial aid.
