Agee, former Grady College dean, dies

Warren Agee
Warren K. Agee, 88, dean emeritus of the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication and a pioneer in the field of mass communication education, died in Athens on June 14.

Agee was only the second person to hold the title of dean since the Grady College was founded in 1915. He succeeded the college’s first dean, John Drewry, in 1969 and held the post until 1975 when he stepped down to return to teaching and writing. After retiring in 1987 he continued to teach, write and serve as a consultant.

Agee was an early leader in developing the field of mass communication. A textbook he co-wrote with Phillip Ault and Edwin Emery, titled Introduction to Mass Communication, was one of the first texts published on the subject. In use for more than 40 years, the book has been republished 12 times, including editions in eight foreign languages.
