SREL budget is cut, employees face layoffs in October
About one-third of the employees working under a U.S. Department of Energy contract at the university’s Savannah River Ecology Laboratory have been notified that their positions will end Sept. 30, 2005, due to a reduction in the federal grant that funds much of the facility.

Soloski resigns as dean, Reid to serve interim appointment
John Soloski, dean of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication for the past four years, resigned from his position on June 30.
Summer fellowships keep students learning, working with faculty mentors on research
Twenty-five UGA undergraduates are using their summer vacation for individual research projects, guided by faculty mentors, with the help of $2,500 research fellowships competitively awarded by the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities.

Dan Fletcher, professor of poultry science at UGA, explains to a delegation of visiting African diplomats how the price of chicken in the U.S. has decreased since the early part of the 20th century as a result of efficient breeding and processing by poultry producers.
Police dogs: Explosive search capabilities for UGA, community
Xantos, a German shepherd, and Marco, a Belgian malinois, are unusual dogs. They do not get excited about chasing cars or fetching sticks. What they like to do is find bombs. They are part of the FBI-accredited bomb squad at UGA.
Internships allow undergrads to see international training firsthand
UGA students Jess Johnson and Zachary Smith received internships this summer in the Sino-American Joint Training Program coordinated by the Carl Vinson Institute of Government’s International Center for Democratic Governance. The internships are sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach.
Designer Finals
Bonnie Bakert, a senior in interior design, was one of six UGA students selected to participate in the HGTV series ‘Designer Finals’ this spring. She redesigned the bedroom of a Madison County teeenager.
