Challenging education: Task force releases report of year-long study
of university’s general education curriculum

A task force that spent the past academic year conducting a comprehensive examination of undergraduate education at UGA submitted its report this month to Provost Arnett C. Mace Jr. The document contains more than 40 recommendations aimed at strengthening general education and creating a campus life centered on learning.

“Our general education requirements hadn’t been reviewed for more than a dozen years,” says Mace. “Given our rapidly changing world, I thought it necessary to determine our goals and then modify what we’re doing to fit those goals.”

The $96.9 million is a 24 percent increase over last year’s total of $77.8 million. Giving through the annual fund program totaled a record $8.38 million, up from $8.25 million the previous year. Thirteen contributors made gifts or commitments of $1 million or more.

University posts fifth straight record year in fundraising
Private giving to UGA soared to a record high of $96.9 million in the fiscal year that ended June 30, topping the previous year’s total by more than $19 million and pushing the university’s half-billion-dollar capital campaign to almost
$350 million.

This was the fifth consecutive year for record-high private gifts and pledges and puts UGA on the brink of realizing a long-sought goal of garnering $100 million in private gifts in a single year.
