Princeton tackles grade inflation
Princeton has launched a campaign to cut the number of “easy A’s” among undergraduate students. The campaign is designed to decrease the number of A-plus, A or A-minus grades to 35 percent. The Faculty Committee on Grading said that last year 41 percent of the grades were in the A range.

Nancy Malkiel, dean of Princeton’s undergraduate division, said that if the same efforts are made this year compared to last year, then the university will achieve its goal. However, student leaders fought the policy saying that students were not happy, worrying that lower grades might keep them out of top graduate schools and that professors would issue grades based on policy instead of merit.

Columbia dedicates $15 million to faculty diversification campaign
Columbia University trustees unanimously approved a funding commitment of $15 million to a campaign for faculty diversification. The campaign includes efforts to hire
15-20 female and minority scholars in the arts and sciences department over the next three to five years.

The diversification plans also include a change in the process of faculty recruitment, hiring, retention and promotion.

“Building a diverse university community requires sustained commitment, concerted effort and the attention of us all,” says Lee C. Bollinger, Columbia’s president. “With this investment we are reaffirming Columbia University’s commitment to our core values of inclusion and academic excellence.”
—Emily Begnaud
