Mapping out the past

The Sanborn Maps Database offers a glimpse of Georgia town layouts from 1884-1922 through digitized fire insurance maps.

The site, which has maps for 133 municipalities, allows users to look up information by city, year and address.

In addition, the maps are color-coded, showing the location and use of buildings as well as the materials employed in their construction. The maps also indicate which city utilities were available at the time.

The database is a project of the Digital Library of Georgia and uses 4,445 maps from the University of Georgia Libraries Map Collection.
