Five selected as first service-learning fellows
Five faculty members have been named the university’s first Service-Learning Fellows. The group, selected for their interest in service-learning pedagogy and research, will meet regularly throughout the spring semester, with follow-up meetings planned next fall.

The fellows program was initiated to cultivate a core group of campus leaders engaged in service learning, according to Shannon Wilder, coordinator of the recently established Office of Service Learning.

“Among the goals of the program is to increase their familiarity and exposure to service learning so they, in turn, can share ideas with colleagues from other disciplines and potentially develop collaborative, interdisciplinary service-learning projects,” Wilder says.

The fellows also will explore evaluation and assessment strategies for measuring service learning’s impact on students, faculty and community members.

Each fellow will receive up to $3,000 for professional development, course development and implementation costs that may cover curriculum materials, shared materials for community partners and course-related travel.

The faculty selected for the pilot program are David Berle, horticulture department in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences; Donna Bliss, School of Social Work; Keely Jones, School of Public and International Affairs; Katherine Kipp, psychology department in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences; and Paul Matthews, Center for Latino Achievement and Success in Education in the College of Education.

The participants in the pilot program will help shape the structure and selection process for subsequent fellows and will act as mentors for those who follow them, according to Nancy Williams, who serves as faculty associate with the Office of Service Learning. In the future, the fellows program will run throughout the academic year, beginning in the fall semester.
