$2 million gift will create alcohol education center
Jack and Nancy Fontaine’s lives were shattered five years ago when their teenage son died in an alcohol-related car accident. But from the tragedy, the Texas couple has resolved to help UGA students understand how bad choices about alcohol can lead to grievous consequences.

U. of Chicago linguistics prof will give Snyder Lecture
Though University of Chicago professor Salikoko S. Mufwene teaches linguistics, the globalization-themed speech he plans to give at the 14th Annual Darl Snyder Lecture will have broad appeal, he says. The lecture will be held at
4 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.
Rosa Parks commemorative event spurs spirited discussion about diversity
A Feb. 6 commemoration of the life of Rosa Parks began with student panelists’ reflections on her role in the civil rights movement and ended in a spirited discussion on the university’s state of diversity.

Dubbed the “Mother of the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement, Parks is famous for her refusal in 1955 to give up her bus seat to a white passenger. Her subsequent arrest and trial ignited the Montgomery Bus Boycott against racial segregation. She died this past October at the age of 92.
Lecturer: UGA is responsible for producing ‘good citizens’
While the University of Georgia can take pride in many of its programs, there is some room for improvement when it comes to its responsibility to produce good citizens. That was one of the points Bernard Dauenhauer, emeritus professor in the philosophy department, made during his Jan. 27 Founders’ Day Lecture entitled “Justice, Truth and the Place of Universities.”
Dancing with a purpose
The 24-hour marathon at the Ramsey Student Center capped a year of fundraising in which students received $249,508.33 in donations for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Committee named to conduct search for next senior VP for finance, administration
A search committee has been formed to identify candidates for the position of senior vice president for finance and administration at UGA.

The committee will conduct a national search to choose a successor to Henry (Hank) Huckaby, who has announced that he will retire June 30. Huckaby has been senior vice president since 2000.
Housing director prepares to close door on his 16-year career at UGA
Just inside the door of Jim Day’s office stands a pair of tall, black boots caked in red clay. Day, executive director of university housing, keeps them handy for impromptu visits to construction sites or to survey “the odd broken water pipe,” he says.
