Lessons are from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. and each session includes nine lessons. Sessions will begin on June 23, July 7, July 21 and Aug. 4. The fee is $50. For information, call 542-5947.

Writing proposals
Interested faculty are invited to submit proposals until June 15 for writing-intensive courses to be included in a pilot program. The Faculty Senate Ad Hoc Committee, with support from the dean of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, is conducting a one-year pilot program during the 1997-98 academic year to foster "writing-intensive" courses designed to provide more writing in the existing curriculum.

Approximately 20 writing-intensive sections of courses are expected to be funded for the pilot program. As part of the program, teaching assistants, funded by the dean's office and the office of the vice president for academic affairs, will be assigned to each course selected for the program. The teaching assistants will be given training in reading, commenting on and evaluating student writing. The support will include the funding of the extra teaching assistants and workshops for faculty in the specifics of design and implementation of enhanced writing requirements for their courses

Sponsored by the Office of Instructional Development, the first workshop in the fall features composition scholar Patricia Bizzell, professor of English and director of writing programs at the College of the Holy Cross.

WebCT workshops
The Office of Instructional Development and University Computing and Networking Services are sponsoring four WebCT workshops. On June 3 from 12:10 to 1 p.m., Greg Ashley and George Matthews from UCNS will present "How You Can Use WebCT for Preparing Web Course Materials," an overview that will include demonstrations of some of the features that can be used to prepare Web-based course materials. No registration is required.

Margaret Anderson and Michelle Bruce of OID will present two sessions of the workshop "Introduction: Preparing Web Pages Using Netscape Navigator Gold." The first is June 11 from 2 to 4 p.m.; the second is June 12 from 9 to 11 a.m. at OID. The hands-on workshop will focus on preparing a syllabus which includes formatting, importing graphics, linking to other sites and to other documents, and using lists and tables. There is no charge for this workshop but since seating is limited, registration is required.

Ashley and Matthews will present two sessions of the workshop "Nuts and Bolts: Learning to Use WebCT." The first session is June 18 from 2 to 5 p.m.; the second is June 19 from 9 a.m to noon. This hands-on workshop will focus on using WebCT. Participants should know how to create HTML documents and should bring a syllabus in HTML (can be the one created in the Navigator Gold workshop). There is no charge for this workshop but since seating is limited, registration is required.

On June 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be an "Informal Independent Workshop: Nuts and Bolts, Part II" for interested faculty to work independently on their WebCT course. Staff from OID and UCNS will be available to answer questions. Participants in this workshop should have attended one of the earlier Nuts and Bolts workshops or have experience using WebCT.

All workshops will be held at the Office of Instructional Development. For more information or to register, call 542-1355, send an e-mail message to oid@uga.cc.uga.edu or visit the OID Web site.
