Break in publication
Because of spring break, Columns will not be printed on March 13. Regular weekly publication of the newspaper resumes March 20. Deadline to submit announcements for that issue is 5 p.m. on March 8.

NEH workshop
Douglas Arnold, senior program officer, NEH education division, will conduct an information session and workshop for faculty and administrators on the funding programs of the National Endowment for the Humanities, an independent grant making agency of the U.S. government. The workshop will take place April 7 from 10:30 a.m.-noon in 265 Park Hall.

The session will feature an overview of the various NEH funding programs, including research, education, public programs, preservation and access, and challenge grants, and the State Humanities Councils, with an emphasis on individual research opportunities and education programs. It also will feature an introduction to the endowment’s current We the People initiative, which focuses on American history, culture, and ideas; examples of recently-funded NEH projects; a discussion of the endowment’s application review process; grant-writing tips; and a question-and-answer period.

The workshop is free and open to faculty and administrators at UGA as well as those from other institutions in the Southeast, but registration is required.

Arnold also will be available from 1-5 p.m. at the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts for a limited number of appointments to discuss possible NEH projects with individuals and small groups Contact the Willson Center by phone (542-3966) or e-mail (ctrha@uga.edu) to register.

Career conference
The UGA Alumni Association’s Multicultural Programs presents “Plotting the Course for Success” March 25 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. The daylong event provides career advancement training primarily to Hispanic, African-American, Asian and Indian alumni. Events are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., with most of the day devoted to workshops focusing on career and personal development strategies, enhancing entrepreneurial skills and providing networking opportunities.

Longterm care seminar
The College of Public Health’s Institute of Gerontology will offer a longterm care planning seminar on March 8, 1:30-4:30 p.m., at the Callaway Building of the State Botanical Garden. Speakers will discuss issues surrounding longterm care needs for individuals, their parents or other loved ones, including longterm care insurance, reverse mortgages and other private financing options, and the continuing care retirement community concept.

Leadership applications
UGA’s Fanning Institute is accepting applications for the Latino Youth Leadership Program. The program is open to Latino youth ages 15-19 from across Georgia. Selected students will participate in a yearlong mentorship as well as two sessions on the UGA campus July 9-12, 2006, and Jan. 12-13, 2007. All program costs are underwritten by sponsors.

During the on-campus sessions, university faculty and community leaders will discuss global and societal issues that impact Latino communities and will share information about how to impact change through leadership. Participants will develop knowledge and skills that they can use to make meaningful change in their local communities. Students also will learn about college selection and the admissions process.

Book reading, signing
UGA alumnus Scott Walker, author of Hell’s Broke Loose in Georgia, will read from and sign copies of his book March 11 from 2-4 p.m. at Barnes and Noble on Atlanta Highway.
