University of Pennsylvania will provide grants for needy students

In an effort to increase socioeconomic diversity, the University of Pennsylvania announced plans to provide grants to all students coming from families earning less than $50,000 per year.

The plan comes courtesy of a $6.3 million budget increase for the coming academic year. The announcement followed similar declarations from Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Other institutions that have made such offers include the University of Minnesota, the University of Virginia, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Princeton University.

Survey: Private institutions spend more on recruiting than public ones
Private schools spend about four times as much to recruit new students compared to their public counterparts, according to a survey by Noel-Levitz.

Private four-year institutions spent a median amount of $2,073 for each new student admitted compared to the $455 public universities doled out. The report also found that public universities decreased the median spending by about $60 per student from 2004 to 2005 while private institutions raised their median by $170.
