Revised parking policy
At its March 23 meeting, the University Cabinet approved a new set of rules for UGA football fans. Starting this fall, sidewalk parking will be prohibited except for designated areas (the south side of Carlton Street from Sanford Drive to East Campus Road); parking on grass and other vegetative areas will be prohibited; the Intramural Fields will be opened for game-day parking; tailgating setups in parking spaces will be prohibited; no tailgating before 7 a.m. on Saturday will be allowed; and unauthorized use of UGA power and cable hookups will be prohibited. Alcohol-free ‘family-friendly zones’—one each on North Campus and South Campus—and more portable toilet facilities and trash receptacles will be provided. Locations for corporate and club tailgating activities will be assigned by the Athletic Association.

The revisions do not affect the current policy for recreational vehicles, which are allowed to park in peripheral campus areas starting at 6 p.m. on Friday.

NEH workshop
Douglas Arnold, senior program officer in the education division of the National Endowment for the Humanities, will lead a workshop for faculty and administrators on the funding programs of the NEH, an independent grant-making agency of the U.S. government. The workshop will be on April 7, 10:30 a.m.-noon, in room 265 of Park Hall.

The session will feature an overview of NEH funding programs, including research, education, public programs, preservation and access, challenge grants and the State Humanities Councils, with an emphasis on individual research opportunities and education programs. There also will be an introduction to the NEH’s “We the People” initiative, which focuses on American history, culture and ideas. Arnold will discuss the endowment’s application review process and offer grant-writing tips.

The workshop is free and open to faculty and administrators at UGA as well as those from other institutions in the Southeast, but registration is required.

Arnold also will be available from 1-5 p.m. at the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts for a limited number of appointments to discuss possible NEH projects with individuals and small groups. To register, contact the Willson Center by phone (542-3966) or e-mail
(ctrha@uga.edu).

Environmental opportunities in China
The Office of Global Programs will host the seminar “Prospects for Cooperative Environmental Research and Education in Shanghai, China” April 20, noon-2 p.m. at the Driftmier Engineering Center Auditorium.

Presenters include Genxiang Shen of the Shanghai Academy of Environmental Sciences; Wu Chengjian, dean of the international cooperation division of the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau; and Cao Luli, president of the Shanghai Academy of Environmental Sciences. To RSVP, contact Misty Pierce by phone (542-1073) or e-mail (mistyp@uga.edu).

Service-Learning Fellows applications
The Office of Service Learning is accepting applications for its 2006-2007 Service Learning Fellows program.

The year-long program is an opportunity for selected faculty members to develop, implement and integrate service learning into their teaching and research while supporting their leadership in service-learning pedagogy and research on campus. The program is open to all permanent, full-time UGA faculty members of the core of instruction, including public service and clinical faculty members, with an interest in service learning. Up to five faculty members will be selected and will meet monthly during the 2006-2007 academic year.

Applications are due April 21. For more information and instructions for applying, visit the OSL Web site (www.servicelearning.uga.edu).

For questions concerning application materials and program information, contact Shannon Wilder by e-mail (swilder@uga.edu) or phone (542-0535).

Mediation project
Mediation of conflicts is available through the university’s Mediation Project.

Mediation is a voluntary, informal alternative to adversarial proceedings such as grievances or litigation. The process allows people to resolve disputes for themselves in a mutually acceptable way with the assistance of neutral, third-party mediators. The purpose of mediation is not to determine who wins and loses but rather to help parties reach their own practical, workable solutions to problems. Mediators are trained UGA faculty, staff and administrators.

Mediation is totally voluntary and is available to all members of the university community.

Anyone interested in using the services of the Mediation Project should contact Art Leed in Legal Affairs by phone (542-0006) or e-mail (aleed@uga.edu).
