‘Stellar record’: Four Honors students named 2006 Goldwater Scholars
Four UGA Honors students have been awarded the 2006-2007 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, one of the most prestigious scholarships in the country for undergraduates in mathematics, science and engineering.

UGA is among a handful of institutions nationally with the maximum number of Goldwater Scholars allowed per school this year. A total of 30 UGA students have received the award since 1995.

Coverdell Center dedication will affect on-campus traffic
The UGA community is invited to the dedication for the Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences. It will begin at 2 p.m. April 7 and includes a keynote address from former U.S. President George H. W. Bush.
3,500 employees have pledged $20 million to campaign
The employee portion of the Archway to Excellence Campaign kicked off with a big announcement: 3,500 faculty, staff and retirees have already given or pledged
$20 million. Held in the Tate Student Center, the kickoff brought together professors and staffers to nosh on finger foods, hear live jazz and listen to an appeal from the university.
Band members ‘tune up’ on Chinese language, culture
“How many of you think fortune cookies come from China?” Rongrong Liu asked the hundreds of Redcoat band members packed into Leebern Band Hall. “None? Good, so you know not to ask for them.
New committee will examine wages being paid to university employees
The University Council has authorized the creation of a study committee to examine the issue of wages paid to university employees, particularly those at the low end of the wage scale.

The council’s action at its March 23 meeting was prompted by a request to the council’s Executive Committee from two local organizations, the Economic Justice Coalition of Athens and the UGA Living Wage Network, to endorse a “proposal for family supportive wages and benefits on behalf of the lowest wage earners of the University of Georgia.”
Search committee identifies three candidates for art school directorship
Three candidates for the directorship of the Lamar Dodd School of Art at UGA have been selected by a university search committee.  Two of the candidates have visited campus and presented a lecture. The third will visit April 4.

Best-selling author and scholar Michael Eric Dyson will deliver the keynote address at the sixth annual Mary Frances Early Lecture on April 4 at Charlie Murphy is known for his role on the sketch/variety program Chappell’s Show on the Comedy Central television network. 7 p.m. in the Chapel.

Two chosen recipients of UGA’s outstanding adviser/mentor award
A faculty member in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and an adviser in the College of Education will receive the 2006 Outstanding Adviser/Mentor Award.

The award is presented to recognize faculty and staff members for excellence in advising undergraduate students on selection of classes and course of study, assisting them with academic problems and providing guidance on related matters such as graduate school and careers.
Be prepared: Class teaches faculty, staff to prepare for emergencies
Many credit the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 with starting a trend toward disaster readiness in America. After the attacks, the federal government started a Department of Homeland Security, which began issuing national alert levels and urged Americans to keep supplies on hand in case of the unforeseen.
Suite named for Honors Program benefactor
The director’s suite of the Honors Program was recently named for Sheffield Hale, a longtime benefactor of the program. A UGA alumnus—and former Honors Program participant—Hale has given gifts to support the Lothar Tresp Lecture and the Honors Program’s alumni outreach efforts
