State, UGA bid to house new bio and ag defense facility
Gov. Sonny Perdue announced late last month that the state of Georgia has submitted two potential UGA sites to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as locations for the proposed National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility.
“I am convinced that Georgia has the right combination of resources, infrastructure and talent to bring this research center to our state,” he says. “Georgia already has invested heavily in life sciences and agriculture. We have some of the best and brightest minds in the country already working in these fields.”

Graduate programs remain strong in magazine’s ranking
Several of the university’s graduate programs are once again ranked in the top 50 according to the latest issue of “America’s Best Graduate Schools” published by U.S. News & World Report. UGA’s College of Education is ranked in a tie at 21st, the School of Law is tied at 34th and the Terry College of Business is tied at 46th. |

Students awaiting word on their admissions status to UGA’s class of 2010 received news last week when final notices were sent by mail and also posted on a password-protected section of the admissions office Web site. |
John Inscoe, Southern historian, has been named a University Professor
John Inscoe, a professor of Southern history at UGA, has been named a University Professor. His appointment was confirmed recently by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents. |

New director works to raise profile of environmental ethics program
Earlier this year, a 23-year-old interdisciplinary
program welcomed a new director and an old friend
when Dorinda Dallmeyer became head of the Environmental
Ethics Certificate Program, part of the College
of Environment and Design.
Dallmeyer, who retired from UGA in October after two decades with the Dean Rusk Center, returned to work with the EECP where she has been both an instructor and a member of its executive committee. |

U. of Cincinnati prof named new director
of women’s studies
The university has appointed a new director of its Institute for Women’s Studies. Chris Cuomo, currently a philosophy professor at the University of Cincinnati, will begin her new post in August, pending approval by the board of regents. |
New digs: Georgia Center ready to show off
first phase of two-year, $1 million renovation
The Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel is inviting UGA employees and community members to the see the results of its $1 million overhaul.
“We’re excited to show off our renovations,” says Kim Rogers, the center’s sales manager. “I think a lot of people have either come to the Georgia Center years ago and have no idea how much we have changed or they have never been at all. We want to invite them to see what we’ve been adding. |
