98-year-old receives varsity letter
Laura Craig Koch, a 98-year-old graduate of West Virginia University, finally received the varsity letter she earned.

While attending the university more than 77 years ago, Koch was given letters cut from felt instead of a varsity letter because she was the only woman to qualify for a letter that year.

State Sen. Clark Barnes learned about Koch’s situation after meeting her granddaughter during a legislative reception earlier this month. He contacted the WVU athletic department, which awarded Koch with her long overdue recognition.

While at the university, Koch participated in track and field, baseball, basketball and field hockey. She graduated in 1929 after majoring in home economics, chemistry and biology.

U. of Pittsburgh Medical Center joins plans for $398 million research center
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center recently announced plans with the Italian government, the Region of Sicily and Italy’s National Research Council to create a $398 million Biomedical Research and Biotechnology Center.

According to UPMC officials, the Italian government will fund the project. Management responsibilities will include overseeing operations of the center, training researchers and staff and attracting research funding and private investors. The center is expected to open by 2010 and will focus on five areas of biomedical research: drug discovery, vaccine development, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, molecular imaging and computational and structural biology.
