Mentoring awards presented during annual CURO symposium
The Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities presented awards to two faculty members for their commitment to supporting UGA students in research activities at the annual undergraduate research symposium earlier this month. After presenting the Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentor awards for the past five years, CURO now recognizes faculty for mentoring at different stages of their careers.

Patricia Hunt-Hurst, associate professor of textiles, merchandising and interiors, received the Master Award. She has mentored close to 50 undergraduates in the past 15 years, many of whom have conducted projects on items from the historic costume and textiles collection maintained by UGA’s College of Family and Consumer Sciences and from other collections.

Rodney Mauricio, associate professor of genetics, received the Early Career Award. Since coming to UGA in 1999, Mauricio has guided 19 undergraduates in their projects, ranging from genetic origins of seed size variations to plants’ genetic responses to antibiotics produced by soil bacteria.

CURO also presented a mentoring award to Christopher Anderson, a Ph.D. candidate in UGA’s Institute of Ecology. Dawn Holligan, a doctoral student in plant biology, also was recognized for her mentoring efforts.
