University will add degree programs at its Griffin campus
The university will offer two new bachelor’s degree programs at its Griffin campus, as well as a “math leaders” graduate degree program aimed at elementary school teachers in that area. The programs were approved by the University Council last week and will be available in the fall, pending approval by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents.

Final run-through: Redcoat Band offers free concert before China trip
In anticipation of their 16-day tour of China starting May 14, the Redcoat Band invites the UGA and Athens communities to a free send-off concert on May 12 at
7 p.m. at Woodruff Practice Field, off Lumpkin and Smith streets, adjacent to the Spec Towns Track. The concert is sponsored by the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, the UGA Alumni Association and Chick-fil-A.
Faculty discuss academic rigor at annual symposium
More than 60 junior and senior faculty headed to Unicoi State Park in April to discuss academic rigor in the classroom and beyond at the annual Academic Affairs Faculty Symposium.

Sponsored by the Teaching Academy, the event included a keynote address by Meigs Professor Loch Johnson, an update on the recommendations from the Task Force on General Education and Student Learning and sessions on assessing learning outcomes and understanding the contemporary student.
Civil rights historian warns that democracy is in danger
“We speak like Martin Luther King but govern like Caesar,” said Taylor Branch, addressing the audience crowding the Chapel. “This is because our history is unstable. We’re in danger of doing what we did 100 years ago in reconstruction.

“We live in a world that’s been liberated by the civil rights movement, but public policy does not acknowledge it,” he added.
Perfect ending
The gymnastics team completed a perfect, undefeated season at the Women’s Gymnastics Championships late last month in Oregon with a score of 197.75, the team’s highest since winning last year’s national title.
Honors student is state’s only Morris Udall Scholarship recipient
Lisa Rivard, an Honors student at UGA, has been named a 2006 Morris K. Udall Scholar. Rivard, a junior environmental health science major from Lake Elmo, Minn., is the only recipient from a Georgia institution.
Early lecturer discusses African-American leadership

Family and Consumer Sciences dean plans to step in new direction
Sharon Nickols is not retiring. And, she’s not stepping down as dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.

“I’m stepping up to the faculty,” she emphasizes as the end of her nearly
15-year tenure as dean draws closer.

In fact, Nickols is looking forward to returning to a teaching and research position for the first time in 20 years when she ends her tenure as dean on June 30.

Towering issue: Graduate students propose new designs for Chapel bell area
The Chapel bell is a familiar landmark on North Campus—almost.

“Everybody remembers the bell tower, but if you ask them to describe the space around it, nobody remembers that,” said Brian LaHaie, a professor in the School of Environmental Design.
