New dean chosen for Grady College

Culpepper Clark

E. Culpepper Clark, the dean of the College of Communication and Information Sciences at the University of Alabama, has been named new dean of UGA’s Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Clark’s appointment, announced by Arnett C. Mace Jr., UGA’s senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, is effective July 1 pending approval by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents.

UGA names new associate provost for institutional diversity
Cheryl Dozier, assistant vice president for academic affairs for
University of Georgia programs offered in Gwinnett, has been named associate provost for institutional diversity at UGA, effective July 1, pending approval by the University System Board of Regents. 
Fulbright scholarships given to two Foundation Fellows
Sara Pilzer and Mike Lynch, UGA Foundation Fellows who graduated earlier this month, received Fulbright teaching scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year. Pilzer will teach English in South Korea, and Lynch will teach English in Spain.

The Fulbright award includes a monthly stipend and travel expenses. The Fulbright program was established in 1946 after Sen. J. William Fulbright introduced a bill to support an exchange program with the goal of “promotion of international good will through the exchange of students in the fields of education, culture and science.”

University toughens alcohol policy, starts mandatory student program
All new UGA students will be required to complete an online alcohol education course during their first semester as part of the university’s stepped-up efforts to address student alcohol-related problems.

The University Council approved the mandatory course at its final meeting of the academic year April 25. All incoming freshmen and transfer students must complete the three-hour course during their first semester. Those who don’t will not be allowed to enroll for the next semester.
Honors Program to host policy institute at Carter Library
UGA and Albany State University will co-sponsor a public policy institute at the Jimmy Carter Library June 9-10 in Atlanta. This is the third year the institute has prepared participants to serve as forum moderators to lead discussions on critical public issues.

Faculty, staff and students from UGA, Albany State and other Georgia institutions, as well as leaders from community organizations from in- and out-of-state, will attend the two-day institute.
