Donna Alvermann, a Distinguished Research Professor in the College of Education’s Department of Language and Literacy Education, was awarded the 2006 William S. Gray Citation of Merit by the International Reading Association for her outstanding contributions to the field of reading education.
Alvermann’s research focuses on youths’ multiple literacies in and out of school. From 1992 to 1997, she co-directed the National Reading Research Center, funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

Carl Glickman, scholar-in-residence and past University Professor of Education at UGA, has been selected to serve on the steering committee for the Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools.
The mission of the campaign is to renew the historic role of America’s schools in building a healthy democracy. The steering committee is the policy-setting body for the campaign and is composed of heads of many the leading civic, education and service organizations in the U.S.
Jooyoung Kim, assistant professor of advertising in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, was first author of a research paper that was recently named 2006 Best Conference Paper by the American Academy of Advertising. The annual AAA conference is the premiere academic conference for advertising scholars in the U.S.
Kim’s paper, “The Six-Construct Model of True Brand Loyalty,” examined why consumers like and buy a specific brand consistently over time and what is behind that behavior.
The College of Education’s Freida Thornton is one of only seven academic advisers in the nation to receive the Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit from the National Academic Advising Association.
She will receive the award on Oct. 16 at the annual NACADA conference in Indianapolis.

Anthony E. “Tony” Waller, associate director of legal career services at the School of Law, has been elected to the board of directors for the National Association for Law Placement. Waller will hold a two-year position on the 14-member panel.
Founded in 1971, NALP is a nonprofit educational association dedicated to facilitating legal career counseling and planning, recruitment and retention, and the professional development of law students and lawyers.
UGA Chief of Information Barbara White was selected as a finalist in the Women of the Year in Technology Award in the not-for-profit / public sector category, one of three awards sponsored by the Women in Technology organization.
