Four finalists named for public health deanship; campus visits scheduled

Four finalists to become the first permanent dean of the new College of Public Health at the University of Georgia have been named by Svein Oie, dean of the College of Pharmacy and chair of the search committee. In chronological order of their campus visits, the finalists are:
• Philip C. Nasca, professor and associate dean for graduate education, School of Public Health and Health Science, University of Massachusetts at Amherst. His campus visit will be Sept. 6.
• J. Jackson (Jack) Barnette, senior associate dean for academic affairs, professor in the Department of Biostatistics, and Senior Scholar in the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy in the School of Public Health, University of Alabama at Birmingham. His campus visit will be Sept. 12.
• Mark A. James, professor and vice chair in the Department of Tropical Medicine, Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Tulane University. His campus visit will be Oct. 2.
• Phillip L. Williams, professor and interim dean of the College of Public Health, University of Georgia. He is Georgia Power Professor of Environmental Health in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences and has served as interim dean since the college became operational on Jan. 1, 2005. His official campus visit will be Oct. 12.

As part of their respective visits, each candidate will present a seminar at 10:30 a.m. in room S141 of the Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences. A reception at which faculty, staff and students may meet each candidate will be held at 4 p.m. on the date of each visit. The receptions for Nasca and Williams will be in room S340 of the Coverdell Center. For Barnette and James, the receptions will be in the rotunda of the Coverdell Center.
