Remembering 9/11:Fifth anniversary of attacks may draw emotional responses

Living in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, reminders have been as inescapable as they are painful. Constant references—from U.S. flags posted on front lawns to politicians’ rants—have kept the specter of Al Qaida planted in America’s collective consciousness.

But the shock and fear of that day have worn off.

The emotions many Americans suffered as they learned about the attacks might be best forgotten, but feelings may swell up again with the advent of their fifth anniversary.

Hispanics will top all U.S. minority groups’ purchasing power by 2007
Hispanic buying power in the U.S. will draw even with African-American buying power in 2006—at just under $800 billion—and is projected to exceed it in 2007, according to a report on minority buying power by the Selig Center for Economic Growth at UGA’s Terry College of Business.

When the topic of emergency preparedness arises, Opal Haley remembers a cartoon of an ostrich with its head in the sand.

Japanese veterinary students learn from UGA College of Veterinary Medicine
Ten Japanese exchange students and two faculty members from Kitasato and Kagoshima universities visited the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital from Aug. 19 through Sept. 2, as part of a long-running international exchange among the universities.
Doctoral student awarded Fulbright research scholarship
UGA Ph.D. candidate Laura Jen Shaffer has been awarded a Fulbright research scholarship to Mozambique for the 2006-2007 academic year. She will begin her dissertation research in ecological and environmental anthropology in January.
Formula for success: Course in Cortona brings students near birthplace of science and medicine
Since 1970, UGA art students have flourished in a study-abroad program set in the quiet, walled town of Cortona in Italy’s gorgeous Tuscany region. This year however, three of the university’s most honored professors brought a new formula to Cortona: the study of science.
