Journalism technology expert will open Grady College lecture series

One of the nation’s leading experts on journalism and technology will speak at UGA on Sept. 20. Mindy McAdams, the University of Florida’s Knight Chair for Journalism Technologies and the Democratic Process, will speak on “Multi-Media Journalism Narratives” at 1 p.m. in Room 150 of the Student Learning Center.

The event is free and open to the public.

McAdams’ speech is the first in a four-part series presented by the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication and its James M. Cox Jr. Institute for Newspaper Management Studies.

Before moving to Florida, McAdams was the Web strategist at the American Press Institute. She also was the first content developer at Digital Ink, The Washington Post’s first online newspaper in 1994. Prior to that, she worked on the metro desk at The Washington Post and at Time magazine.

McAdams gives seminars and workshops on Flash journalism, the use of hypertext in journalism and writing for online media. Her consulting work has taken her to Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Bulgaria, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Britain and Canada.

The next speaker in the Grady College Online Journalism Series is Rick Edmonds, a writer and researcher for the Poynter Institute. He will discuss the business model for online journalism on Oct. 18.
