Harvard, Princeton universities will drop early acceptance programs
Harvard and Princeton universities have announced that beginning in 2008 they will no longer offer early acceptance for applicants, according to The New York Times.

Critics have said early admission programs benefit affluent applicants. Because financially burdened and minority students wait on financial aid information from the universities to which they apply, they are at a disadvantage. Nancy McDuff, UGA’s associate vice president for admissions and enrollment management, said the university has no plans to eliminate its four-year-old early admission program.

University of Illinois goes online

The University of Illinois will soon offer online degree and certificate programs, according to the Daily Illini, the university’s student newspaper. University officials are planning to get the “Global Campus” project up and running by January 2007.

Similar programs started by other research universities in the 1990s were unsuccessful. But University of Illinois officials believe their program will succeed because students and employers now are generally more accepting of online degree programs.
