$1.1 million NSF grant will fund study of bacterial agents
Plasmids, small independently replicating DNA segments found mostly in bacteria and archaebacteria, are molecular trucks, buses and taxicabs. Different plasmids can spread resistance against antibiotics, turn a benign bacterium into a virulent pathogen or degrade environmental contaminants.

By transferring genes among them, plasmids enable the ongoing evolution of these tiny and ever-present microbes.

Turning green: Old College cleaning staff introduces environmentally friendly products into the recently renovated building
Employees inside recently renovated Old College are breathing a little easier, thanks to an environmentally friendly cleaning approach undertaken by UGA.

Custodians in the building are scrubbing dirt and grime with products that lack the harmful ingredients found in conventional cleaners
Bioinformatics investment in computing promises big return
With the launch this month of a new high-performance computing cluster in UGA’s Research Computing Center, bioinformatics researchers at the university can expand their core business: research. The new high-speed computing system analyzes their data 10 to 100 times faster than previous machines, reducing the time it takes to solve a complex problem from many weeks to days or hours.
Norman Giles, genetics research pioneer, dies at the age of 91
Norman H. Giles, a pioneer in genetics research who was instrumental in establishing the university’s genetics department, died Oct. 16 in Norwich, Vt.

Giles, 91, had recently moved to Norwich to live with his daughter and her family after living in Athens for 34 years.
Making the cut at Old College
As part of Homecoming Week activities at UGA, a ceremony was held Oct. 13 to celebrate the conclusion of rehabilitation work on Old College. The ceremony also marked the 200th anniversary of Old College, the first permanent building constructed at the university and the oldest remaining building in Athens
Freshman receives CURO’s inaugural Hollowell apprenticeship
When Erica Holland was a high school senior, she was recognized as a Promising Scholar by UGA’s Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities and invited to campus for CURO’s annual spring symposium where more than 100 undergraduates presented their research.

Now as a UGA freshman, Holland is herself immersed in research as the inaugural recipient of the Donald and Louise Hollowell Apprenticeship offered by CURO, a unit of UGA’s academically rigorous Honors Program.
Second group of service-learning fellows selected
The Office of Service-Learning has chosen its second group of fellows for the 2006-2007 academic year. Five faculty members were selected for their interest in promoting service and civic engagement at UGA and integrating such pedagogy in their teaching and research.
