SIU chancellor becomes professor
The chancellor of Southern Illinois University’s Carbondale campus, who recently faced accusations of plagiarism by an informal group at SIU, will become a tenured professor in architecture after stepping down from his post, The Daily Egyptian, SIU’s student newspaper, reported.

SIU’s president announced that the allegations of plagiarism against Wendler had no part in the chancellor’s change in position, but cited “conflicting leadership styles, a lack of communication and the need for a new administrative make-up” as reasons for the change.

Wendler made headlines in September when he was accused of plagiarizing an initiative to make SIU a top-75 public research institution by 2019. Upon review by an internal committee, his actions were deemed intellectual dishonesty rather than plagiarism.

Gallaudet U. still facing critics
Despite dwindling student protests over the would-be hiring of its new president, Gallaudet University is facing criticism from its administration, faculty and students’ parents, reports the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Groups are blaming university officials for not enforcing higher academic standards and urging faculty to pass failing students.

In addition, a report by the federal Office of Management and Budget shows that the university is missing graduation rate targets, with only 28 percent of students earning their degrees in six years or less.

Administrators say that they intend to work to fix the problems facing the institution.
