Civil rights activist will speak at 2007 Freedom Breakfast

UGA and the Athens-Clarke County government and school district will observe the 2007 Martin Luther King Jr. holiday with the annual Freedom Breakfast Jan. 12 at
7:30 a.m. at the Tate Student Center’s Georgia Hall. The keynote speaker is Evelyn Lowery, founder and chair of Southern Christian Leadership Conference Women’s Organizational Movement for Equality Now Inc. The President’s 2007 Fulfilling the Dream Award will be presented following the keynote address.

Evelyn Lowery
Fulfilling the Dream award recipients, two individuals from the community and two from UGA, will be recognized for significant efforts to build bridges of unity and understanding among residents of Athens-Clarke County.

Lowery, a champion for the rights of others, has been committed to the civil rights movement since age 18. She comes from a family deeply rooted in the movement with her father serving aslocal president of the NAACP in Memphis, Tenn., during her childhood. Her activism continued in partnership with her husband, civil rights activist the Rev. Joseph Lowery.

In 1979, she formed SCLC/W.O.M.E.N., an advocacy organization for the rights of women, children and families. According to its Web site, the organization responds to the problems of the disenfranchised regardless of ethnicity, gender, age or religion. Among her many accomplishments, Lowery founded the Women’s Empowerment Training Center for GED/computer training, created the Bridging-the-Gap girls to women mentoring program and led the purchase and renovation of the historic Tabor Building on Atlanta’s Auburn Avenue, which houses SCLC/W.O.M.E.N.

Tickets for the Freedom Breakfast are $15 and may be purchased through Jan. 8 from UGA’s Office of Institutional Diversity. For tickets or information on how to submit a nomination for the “Fulfilling the Dream” award, contact Joan Pittman at (706) 583-8195. The deadline for nominations is Dec. 13.
