Iran defied international law by seizing the American Embassy and taking 66 hostages; negotiations broke down and led to a stalemate until the prisoners were released on Ronald Reagan’s inauguration as president in 1981.
 
             
Iran flaunts international law by progressing with nuclear ambitions and aids sectarian violence in Middle East; U.S. is holding out on negotiations.

 


APPROVAL RATING
                   
Carter’s approval ratings dipped following an upswing in gasoline prices and a slumping economy.
                   
George W. Bush’s approval ratings fell in part due to higher gas prices, though other economic indicators like the stock market, continue to do well.

THE ENVIRONMENT
                   
Carter signed legislation leading to the establishment of the current contours of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.
                   
Debate continues as to whether that site should be open for oil drilling.

 
THE VICE PRESIDENT
                   
Carter’s vice president, Walter Mondale, gained unprecedented power in the office.
                   
Vice President Dick Cheney wields wide-ranging authority in the current administration.

 
THE MIDDLE EAST
                   
Carter sought to secure peace in the Middle East through extensive dialogue with nations and brokered a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.
                   
Current leaders ousted the Middle Eastern governments run by Saddam Hussein and the Taliban.
