Weinberg, one of top cancer researchers in U.S., will give annual Ritter Lecture

The man who helped isolate the first human cancer-causing gene will speak at UGA.

Robert A. Weinberg, the Daniel K. Ludwig Professor for Cancer Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will deliver the annual Hope T.M. Ritter Lecture in Cellular Biology on Jan. 9 at 4 p.m. in Room H237 in the College of Veterinary Medicine. A reception will be held for Weinberg immediately afterward in Room 122 of the same building. The events are open free to the public.

Weinberg is a winner of the National Medal of Science for his work as a cancer scientist. A founding member of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at MIT, Weinberg and his colleagues isolated the first gene known to cause cancer in humans, along with the first tumor suppressor gene.

He is the author and editor of five books and more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals. His most recent book is The Biology of Cancer, which Science called “no doubt the definitive statement on its topic today.” Among his other books are One Renegade Cell and Racing to the Beginning of the Road: The Search for the Origin of Cancer.

“Dr. Weinberg is one of the leading cancer researchers in the world and one of the pre-eminent scientists of our time,” said Mark Farmer, head of UGA’sdepartment of cellular biology.

Weinberg is a member of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from MIT and did postdoctoral research at the Weismann Institute and the Salk Institute before returning to MIT in 1972.

The Ritter Lecture Series was established in 1999 in honor of Hope T.M. Ritter Jr., professor emeritus of cellular biology. Each year the series brings a distinguished lecturer to UGA. The series is supported by the Ritter Lecture Series Fund. A graduate of Cornell University (A.B.) and Lehigh University (M.S., Ph.D.), Ritter served as an assistant professor at Lehigh University (1948-55), Harvard University (1957-61) and the State University of New York at Buffalo (1961-66) before arriving at UGA in 1966.
