Emory University replaces loans with grants for low-income students
Emory University will replace loans with grants for students from families earning less than $50,000 per year, according to a school press release. To qualify for the program, students must graduate in four years and pay $1,550 the first year and $2,150 for the last three.

In addition, for students who did not qualify for merit-based scholarships as entering freshmen, but have strong academic and service credentials, the university will offer Dean’s Achievement Scholarships. Both programs begin this fall.

The university also plans to expand its merit-scholar offerings with liberal arts scholarships for entering freshmen who don’t qualify for one of the pre-existing scholarships available through the Emory Scholars program.

Possible Bush library stirs controversy at Southern Methodist University
A group of Methodist ministers petitioned Southern Methodist University to remove itself from consideration as the host site for the George W. Bush presidential library, The Dallas Morning News reported.

In an online document, the ministers claimed “the linking of Bush’s presidency with a university bearing the Methodist name is utterly inappropriate.”

During a faculty meeting the university’s president, R. Gerald Turner, assured professors that any agreement to put the library complex on the campus would preserve SMU’s academic values and ethics.
