Casimir Akoh |
Casimir C. Akoh, Distinguished Research Professor in the department of food science and technology, has been elected vice president of the American Oil Chemists’ Society, an international society for fats, oils and related materials.
He will serve as vice president for 2007–2008 and prepare to serve as the next AOCS president in 2008–2009. Akoh will officially be installed as vice president during the AOCS annual meeting and expo in Quebec City, Canada, May 13-16.
The organization has approximately 5,000 members and will celebrate its 100 anniversary in 2009 during Akoh’s presidency. Akoh has served as a governing board member of the organization since 2001 and as secretary since 2004.
Deryl Bailey, associate professor of counseling and human development services, has received the 2007 Mary Smith Arnold Anti-Oppression Award from the Counselors for Social Justice, a division of the American Counseling Association.
The ACA is honoring Bailey for his exemplary record of challenging multiple oppressions in the counseling profession and the Athens community. Faculty members, graduate students and parents nominated Bailey for the award in recognition
of his efforts to support students through his Empowered Youth program.

Edward Delgado-Romero |
Edward Delgado-Romero, an associate professor in the department of counseling and human development resources, has been voted president-elect of the National Latino Psychological Association.
A lifetime founding member of the NLPA, Delgado-Romero served as treasurer and membership chair of the organization from 2002–2005.
Delgado-Romero will take office as NLPA president in 2009 and serve a two-year term. However, the position requires a six-year commitment with a preliminary two-year term as president-elect and an additional two years of service as past president.

Brenda Hayes |
Brenda Hayes, a public service associate with thanning Institute, has been appointed to the Georgia National Register Review Board, part of the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Hayes will work with the review board to nominate properties to the State Historic Preservation Office for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. She also will assist with determining the locations and text for state historical markers, will participate in the state historic preservation planning process and will help advise the Historic Preservation Division on matters concerning the state’s historic preservation program.
