Political science faculty member appointed Albert B. Saye Professor

The School of Public and International Affairs has appointed John A. Maltese as the Albert Berry Saye Professor of American Government and Constitutional Law. Maltese currently is a professor of political science and a Josiah Meigs Distinguished Tea ching Professor—the university’s highest award for excellence in teaching.
John Maltese

Maltese is the author of two award-winning books, Spin Control: The White House Office of Communications and the Management of Presidential News (1992) and The Selling of Supreme Court Nominees (1998). He also is co-author of The Politics of the Presidency
(sixth edition, 2004).

He is the director of the School of Public and International Affairs study abroad program at the University of Oxford. He was program director of “The Carter Presidency: Lessons for the 21st Century,” a conference held in January to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Jimmy Carter’s inauguration as president of the U.S.

“John’s accomplishments in teaching and research make him ideally suited to serve as the Albert B. Saye Professor. I know Albert’s family and former students will be pleased by this appointment,” said Thomas P. Lauth, dean of the School of Public and International Affairs.

Maltese also writes extensively about classical music and won a 1996 Grammy Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Albert B. Saye was a professor of political science at UGA for 40 years, specializing in American government and constitutional law. The professorship in his name is made possible by gifts from his estate and family.
