2007 Peabody Awards presentation ceremony to be screened Sept. 5
The George Foster Peabody Awards will screen the video of this year’s New York Peabody Awards presentation ceremony on Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. in Room 102 of the Student Learning Center.
The ceremony was taped June 4 in the grand ballroom of the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel, with nearly 1,000 recipients and guests in attendance and HBO/NBC sportscaster Bob Costas serving as emcee.
The screening is free and open to all, on campus and off, but students and faculty who served as preliminary judges of this year’s Peabody entries are especially encouraged to attend.
The video includes the opening “Tribute to Winners” montage, remarks by UGA President Michael F. Adams, Peabody Board Chair Meryl Marshall-Daniels, Peabody Director Horace Newcomb and the individual citing of this year’s Peabody honorees.
Those accepting Peabody medallions for work that debuted in calendar year 2006 include Spike Lee, producer/director of When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts, a documentary about Hurricane Katrina’s devastation of New Orleans; Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence and star Zack Braff; and cartoonist Aaron McGruder, creator of The Boondocks.
Terry College to offer international residency program in China
The Terry College of Business is helping to bridge potential gaps in foreign relations with its hands-on International Residency Programs, offered by the Office of Executive Programs. In October, a 15-day trip, “Understanding the Chinese Business Environment,” will render an intensive, first-person primer on China.
The trip—which includes four days in Shanghai, four days in Beijing, three days in Chengdu, two days in Guangzhou and two days in Hong Kong—will include visits to corporations, along with cultural events and sightseeing.
The trip costs $8,500, which includes five-star hotel accommodations and ground, air and rail travel to all program events. Flights to Shanghai and from Hong Kong are not included in the price. Each day’s events begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at 10 p.m.
Executive Programs is making arrangements for a travel group of approximately 20 people.
WUGA wins national journalism awards
Public Radio News Directors Inc. has honored WUGA, 91.7/97.9 FM public radio for the Athens area, with two awards for radio excellence.
The station claimed first place for best commentary for a piece Kathrin Rudland wrote and voiced about the “Importance of Books.” In it, she reminisced about the emotional significance and physical presence of books in her life that can never be replaced by e-texts. Rudland is a longtime member of the Greensboro Writers’ Guild.
WUGA News Director Mary Kay Mitchell took second place for best use of sound for “Latino March.” For the broadcast, Mitchell followed May Day marchers in downtown Athens as they rallied for Hispanic rights in 2006.
The PRNDI awards competition is the only national contest that recognizes outstanding public radio news reporting at local stations. The awards were recently presented at the group’s annual conference in New Orleans.
WUGA has won a total of 11 national, regional and state awards in 2006, including recognition from the Associated Press and the Georgia Association of Broadcasters.
