New book discusses state’s literary figures

Few states have produced a more impressive array of literary figures than Georgia. Authors like Margaret Mitchell, Conrad Aiken, Joel Chandler Harris, Carson McCullers, Flannery O’Connor, Jean Toomer and Alice Walker all hailed from the Empire State of the South.

The New Georgia Encyclopedia Companion to Georgia Literature, published by the UGA Press, contains biographical information and critical discussion on Georgia writers from the 19th century to the present.

The entries discuss each author’s life and work, contributions to Georgia history and culture, and relevance to wider currents in regional and national iterature.

Edited by John Inscoe, editor of the New Georgia Encyclopedia and University Professor of history at UGA, and Hugh Ruppersburg, senior associate dean of arts and sciences and professor of English at UGA, the book also includes lists of recommended reading supplements for most entries.
